WOOD TURTLES

Wood turtles (Glyptemys insculpta) are an endangered species globally, and threatened in the state of Connecticut. As an undergraduate, I worked alongside naturalists at the Great Hollow Nature Preserve and scientists at the American Museum of Natural History to better understand their movement patterns and home range sizes. I used six years of tracking data collected on 27 wood turtles to analyze home range sizes, proximity to roads, and hibernaculum fidelity. Little was known about wood turtles in this part of their range, so our research contributed to an ever-growing wealth of ecological knowledge being used to better protect the species. Now, our findings are being used by Great Hollow to ensure the survival of this thriving wood turtle population.
