Movement ecology of the endangered

Wood turtles are an endangered species globally, and threatened in my home state of Connecticut. For my undergraduate thesis, I worked alongside naturalists at the Great Hollow Nature Preserve and scientists at the American Museum of Natural History to better understand the movement patterns of wood turtles. I used six years of tracking data collected on 27 wood turtles to analyze home range sizes, proximity to roads, and hibernaculum fidelity. Little was known about wood turtles in this part of their range, so our research contributed to an ever-growing wealth of ecological knowledge facilitating improved management for the species. Now, our findings are being used by Great Hollow to ensure the survival of this thriving wood turtle population.
